Low-light performance is more than just sensor sensitivity

At RESTAR FRAMOS, working daily with Sony image sensors, we often hear: “Which sensor is best for low light?”  

The honest answer: it starts with the sensor – but doesn’t end there. 

Sony’s STARVIS™ , STARVIS 2, and emerging STARVIS 3 families are well suited to low-light rolling shutter applications, with high sensitivity and strong SNR performance in visible and near-infrared imaging.  

On the global shutter side, Pregius S™ with BSI technology significantly improves sensitivity compared to traditional GS sensors.  

Sensor selection is one part of the decision. In low-light imaging, what really matters are:  

  • 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 – quantum efficiency, SNR, pixel size, and NIR sensitivity define the foundation of performance  
  • 𝗣𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – larger pixels help in photon collection, but must align with application needs and optics  
  • 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 – light lost in optics cannot be recovered downstream  
  • 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 – critical when operating at the limits of illumination  
  • 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 – noise increases with heat, especially in industrial environments  
  • 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 – ISP configuration, gain strategy, and noise reduction define usable image quality  

Two cameras with similar “low-light specs” can perform very differently in real-world conditions. That’s why proper system-level evaluation – sensor, optics, and processing together – is key.
