Type 1/1.8, 8.40 MP STARVIS 2 CMOS image sensor with HDR functions for 4K UHD security cameras.
The Sony IMX838-AQR1 is an 8.40 MP Type 1/1.8 colour CMOS image sensor for 4K UHD security cameras. It uses a 2.0 μm square-pixel array and STARVIS 2 back-illuminated pixel technology. The sensor is designed for colour image capture in visible-light and near-infrared regions.
Its defining technical characteristic is the combination of STARVIS 2 with Digital overlap HDR and Clear HDR functions. Sony specifies that STARVIS 2 provides a dynamic range more than 8 dB wider than STARVIS at the same pixel size in a single exposure. This capability is complemented by HDR functions intended for scenes containing substantial brightness differences.
The IMX838-AQR1 supports 3840 × 2160 recommended recording pixels in all-pixel scan mode, with maximum readout rates of 60 frame/s at 12-bit output and 72 frame/s at 10-bit output. RAW10 and RAW12 data are transferred through a CSI-2 serial interface.
For camera-system design, the sensor provides all-pixel scan, horizontal and vertical 2/2-line binning, and window-cropping modes. Synchronising-sensor functionality, variable-speed shutter control, selectable gain, and normal or inverted readout provide further acquisition-control options.
The IMX838-AQR1 is intended for 4K UHD security-camera designs that require colour imaging in visible-light and near-infrared conditions. Its STARVIS 2 technology, HDR functions and variable charge-integration shutter support evaluation for scenes with changing illumination and wide brightness differences. Engineering teams can select all-pixel, binned or cropped readout modes according to the required image format and acquisition configuration.
