The IMX678-AAMR1 is a Type 1/1.8, 8.40 MP monochrome CMOS image sensor for security cameras. Its square-pixel array provides a recommended recording resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, supporting 4K-class monochrome image acquisition in a compact optical format.

The sensor incorporates STARVIS 2, a back-illuminated pixel technology developed for security-camera image sensors. The technology supports high image quality in visible-light and near-infrared regions. The Sony flyer specifies high sensitivity, low dark current and no smear, which are relevant characteristics for security imaging in low-illuminance conditions.

Two HDR modes address different acquisition conditions. Digital Overlap HDR combines sequential exposures for scenes containing bright and dark areas. Clear HDR acquires low- and high-gain images simultaneously, avoiding the time difference between exposures that can produce artefacts when a target is moving. Sony identifies this operating principle as suitable for moving-target capture, including traffic-monitoring systems and dashboard cameras.

In all-pixel scan mode, the IMX678-AAMR1 reaches up to 72 frame/s with 10-bit output or 60 frame/s with 12-bit output. Window cropping, horizontal/vertical 2/2-line binning, variable-speed shutter control and a synchronising-sensors function provide options for configuring image acquisition. CSI-2 serial output supports RAW10 and RAW12 formats.
