Sony STARVIS IMX178LLJ-C is a Type 1/1.8, 6.44 MP monochrome back-illuminated CMOS image sensor for industrial camera applications. It belongs to a monochrome 2 MP, 6 MP, and 12 MP STARVIS lineup and provides a 2.4 µm pixel array with a 3096 × 2080 effective-pixel format.
The sensor is distinguished by its STARVIS back-illuminated pixel technology and monochrome implementation. STARVIS was developed for security-camera sensors and provides high image quality in visible-light and near-infrared regions. For IMX178LLJ-C, this technology supports a monochrome sensor option based on the low-illumination characteristics of the corresponding colour STARVIS device.
Output format flexibility is a central capability. The sensor supports all-pixel 6 MP output or 5 MP output in 4:3, 5:4, and 16:9 aspect ratios, allowing the camera output to be selected according to the imaging subject. In the specified 5 MP modes, 12-bit output reaches approximately 60 frame/s, while 14-bit conversion operates at approximately 30 frame/s.
IMX178LLJ-C also supports multiple-exposure drive, with exposure time adjustable for each frame. Its global reset function can be used with a flash to obtain images with low distortion. Low-voltage LVDS output supports channel-count reduction according to frame rate, providing an interface option for industrial camera designs.
IMX178LLJ-C supports monochrome industrial-camera imaging where low-illumination capability, selectable image formats, and flexible exposure functions are important.
