Ultraviolet Image Sensors

Seeing what the eye can’t see

Ultraviolet Global Shutter Image Sensors - Sony Sensor Distribution

Ultraviolet imaging enables detection of features and materials that are not visible in the standard visible spectrum or features that are too small to be resolved effectively by visible light. Traditional image sensors are largely insensitive to UV wavelengths, but Sony overcomes this with specialized materials optimized for UV photon detection.

As an authorized Sony distributor, RESTAR FRAMOS provides access to UV sensor technologies and supports selection for your application.

Specialized UV imaging with Sony IMX487

The Sony IMX487 is a purpose-built UV image sensor designed for applications where standard visible-light cameras cannot reveal enough information. Its sensitivity to ultraviolet wavelengths allows engineers to detect features, materials, and defects that are difficult or impossible to see with conventional sensors.

Combined with Sony’s back-illuminated global shutter architecture, the IMX487 also delivers sharp, distortion-free imaging for moving objects and high-speed inspection processes.

Key characteristics of ultraviolet image sensors

Ultraviolet imaging can reveal surface characteristics and material responses beyond the visible spectrum. This makes the IMX487 especially valuable for precision inspection and analysis tasks.

Key benefits:

  • Detect micro scratches, contamination, and fine surface defects
  • Improve contrast on polished, coated, or reflective surfaces
  • Identify materials that appear similar in visible light
  • Reveal features not easily detectable with standard RGB cameras

The IMX487 combines UV sensitivity with high image resolution, allowing more detail to be captured in a single frame.

Key benefits:

  • Detect smaller defects and finer structures
  • Cover larger inspection areas with fewer cameras
  • Improve throughput in automated inspection systems
  • Support demanding quality control applications

Sony’s global shutter technology exposes all pixels simultaneously, eliminating motion distortion during fast capture.

Key benefits:

  • Sharp imaging of moving objects on conveyors or production lines
  • Accurate measurement without skew or wobble
  • Reliable performance in high-speed machine vision systems

The sensor’s back-illuminated pixel design improves photon efficiency and helps maintain image quality in UV applications.

Key benefits:

  • Lower noise for cleaner UV images
  • Better sensitivity across supported UV wavelengths
  • More stable and repeatable inspection results

Applications using UV image sensors

UV imaging reveals surface features and material properties that are not visible in the standard spectrum, making it valuable for inspection and analysis tasks.
