Type 1/1.8, 8.40 MP STARVIS 2 CMOS image sensor for HDR security cameras in low-light scenes.
The IMX678-AQR1-C is a Type 1/1.8, 8.40 MP color CMOS image sensor for security cameras. Its 3856 × 2180 effective-pixel array supports 3840 × 2160 recording pixels, providing a 4K acquisition format for security-camera designs.
Its defining capability is the combination of STARVIS 2 pixel technology and ClearHDR imaging. STARVIS 2 is Sony’s back-illuminated pixel technology for security-camera sensors, designed for high sensitivity in visible-light and near-infrared regions. ClearHDR simultaneously records image data at different gain levels rather than using exposures with different timings. This approach is intended to extend dynamic range while helping reduce blur and colour tint in scenes containing moving subjects.
The 2.0 µm square-pixel architecture supports the sensor’s Type 1/1.8 optical format and 8.40 MP effective resolution. All-pixel scanning reaches 72 frame/s with 10-bit output or 60 frame/s with 12-bit output, providing defined operating choices for 4K video capture.
For camera-system integration, the sensor provides CSI-2 serial data output in two-, four- or eight-lane configurations, including dual four-lane operation. RAW10 and RAW12 output formats, variable electronic-shutter integration time, 2/2-line binning and window-cropping modes provide further acquisition options.
The IMX678-AQR1-C is intended for security-camera designs that must acquire detailed 4K images under low illumination or scenes with substantial brightness differences. STARVIS 2 sensitivity is relevant to visible and near-infrared imaging, while ClearHDR is designed for high-contrast scenes involving moving objects. R&D teams should evaluate the selected CSI-2 lane configuration, output bit depth and readout mode against their required video pipeline and operating conditions.
