Extending the visible range of what can be seen.
Short-wavelength infrared light (SWIR) is the part of the light spectrum just above what is visible range that the human eye can see, typically from 0.7 um to 2.5um. SWIR light enables interesting imaging applications such as seeing through atmospheric haze, identifying moisture, and making some opaque plastics or materials appear transparent. It helps gleam missing information that cannot be seen otherwise, like bruises on fruit or structure on silicon wafers since silicon is almost transparent in SWIR.
Sony’s SenSWIR™ sensors are not only sensitive in the SWIR wavelength, but can are also sensitive in the full visible light range as well offering high resolution and lower system costs compared to traditional, separate camera setups. A camera with these sensors could simultaneously inspect surface details (visible light) and internal structure (with SWIR).
Sony’s SenSWIR™ technology is special because it combines visible light and Short-Wavelength Infrared (SWIR) imaging on a single sensor using a unique indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) design. These sensors are available in VGA to 5MP resolution, enabling flexibility across a wide range of applications. Their small pixel size supports more compact camera designs and reduces system cost by allowing the use of standard C-mount lenses instead of large, specialized optics.
Additionally, these sensors are available in a variant with an onboard Peltier cooler. It reduces thermal noise within the sensor, improving image quality, particularly critical in SWIR imaging where signals can be affected by heat-induced noise. And, since the TEC (Thermo-electric cooler) is built-in to the sensor, the design complexity is much lower than an external cooling mechanism which would require hermetic sealing to nitrogen purging.
Lower sensor temperature helps ensure that captured data reflects true spectral information, rather than unwanted thermal interference.
SenSWIR sensors enable capture of visible and SWIR information in a single image, eliminating the need for dual-camera setups.
For applications requiring both Visbile and SWIR sensitivity, this means a simplified system design with only one sensor resulting in reduced overall BOM cost as well as no need to perform complicated image fusing. The result is a more efficient solution that expands the practical use of SWIR imaging in cost-sensitive applications.
