Polarization Image Sensors

Beyond reflection suppression: unlocking deep material insights

Discover the unseen with Sony Polarsens™

Sony Polarsens™ technology represents a breakthrough in machine vision, moving beyond simple glare reduction to provide a multi-dimensional understanding of light.

While a standard $10 filter can suppress reflections, Polarsens™ captures the Direction of Polarization and Degree of Polarization (DoP) simultaneously using four-directional polarizer on-chip (0°, 45°, 90°, and 135°). This allows for high-speed, single-shot imaging that reveals surface defects, internal stress patterns, and material contrasts that are entirely invisible to standard sensors.

By integrating polarizer beneath the on-chip microlens layer, the design improves extinction ratio and reduces incident-angle dependence compared to conventional types of polarization sensors.

As an authorized Sony distributor, RESTAR FRAMOS provides technical expertise to help you leverage these deep insights for your specific application.

Key features of polarization image sensors

The true power of Polarsens™ lies in its unique architecture. For each 2×2 pixel block, the sensor captures four different angles of polarization.

  • The color advantage: Sony’s specialized color polarization sensors provide these four angles for each color channel (RGB). This fusion of spectral and polarization data provides a level of information density that is unmatched in the industry.
  • Single-shot acquisition: Capturing intensity, angle, and degree of polarization in one frame enables real-time analysis of high-speed production lines.

Built on a global shutter architecture, these sensors expose all pixels simultaneously, eliminating rolling shutter artifacts

  • Zero focal plane distortion: Critical for high-speed manufacturing where moving objects must be captured with absolute precision.
  • Scalable resolution: Available in 5MP and 12MP models to balance high-detail requirements with wide fields of view.

By analyzing the polarization state of light, Polarsens™ provides visibility where standard cameras fail:

  • Subsurface insights: Detection of internal stress and distortions in glass and transparent films.
  • Feature enhancement: Highlighting scratches, contamination, or markings on highly reflective surfaces.
  • Superior to external filters: Unlike external polarizers, which reduce light throughput and introduce mechanical complexity, on-chip integration improves system robustness, and delivers full-resolution polarimetric data without optical path modification.

Applications using polarization image sensors

Polarsens™ technology is ideal for environments where glare limits visibility or where material properties must be analyzed in real-time.
