Rolling Shutter Image Sensors

Efficient imaging for cost-sensitive designs

Rolling Shutter Image Sensors - Sony Sensor Distribution

Rolling shutter sensors expose and read out pixels sequentially, line by line, enabling efficient readout with lower noise and higher sensitivity compared to global shutter architectures. This approach supports excellent image quality in static or moderately dynamic scenes, making them well-suited for appartifacts where low-light performance, resolution, and cost efficiency are prioritized.

As an authorized distributor, RESTAR FRAMOS Technologies supplies Sony rolling shutter image sensors for various applications, including security and surveillance cameras that operate in challenging lighting conditions.

Key characteristics of rolling shutter image sensors

STARVIS™, STARVIS 2 and STARVIS 3 sensors utilize advanced pixel architectures to achieve low read noise and high sensitivity, enabling reliable imaging under extremely low illumination (down to sub-lux conditions).  Additionally, various advanced technology blocks available on these sensors also enables high Dynamic Range which allows the sensor to handle challenging scenes with bright areas interspersed with darker regions.

They deliver high dynamic range alongside high frame rates, supported by high-throughput interfaces to maintain data integrity. Sensors are available in both color and monochrome variants, with monochrome options providing improved quantum efficiency for low-light and near-IR applications.

Available in resolutions from 2MP to 247MP, these sensors support a wide range of use cases—from precision imaging to large-area monitoring.

Region-of-interest (ROI) or windowing as well as Binning or Sub-sampling features enable partial readout to reduce bandwidth and increase frame rates, allowing system-level optimization based on application requirements.

To capture scenes with large differences in brightness, Sony sensors use HDR techniques that suppress highlight blowout and preserve shadow detail.

Image sensors adjust exposure time and signal processing to balance bright and dark regions, enabling images that more closely match what the human eye perceives.

Supported modes include:

  • Digital Overlap (DOL) HDR: the sensor captures short and long exposure data within a single frame readout, using separate storage/readout timing inside the pixel array. This enables HDR imaging with minimal temporal offset compared with sequential multi-frame methods.
  • Clear HDR: captures low- and high-gain images simultaneously, eliminating time lag between captures.
  •  Clear HDR3 enabled by LOFIC pixel architecture: A new method that samples the same exposure 3 times with High, Low and Super-Low gain, resulting in 96dB Dynamic Range
  • Hybrid HDR3: Another new method that combines DOL and Clear HDR3 methods, resulting in 97dB Dynamic Range

These approaches enable imaging with reduced blowout in bright regions and less loss of detail in dark areas. Clear HDR is particularly effective for moving scenes, as simultaneous capture minimizes motion-related artifacts.

Back-Side Illuminated (BSI) architectures improve photon efficiency by positioning the photodiode above the metal wiring layer, thereby minimizing light loss present in conventional front-illuminated designs, resulting in:

  • Higher sensitivity, particularly in low-light conditions
  • Improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) due to more efficient photon collection
  • Enhanced angular response, enabling better performance with low f-number optics and higher chief ray angles

Enhanced near-IR response in select sensors extends usability beyond the visible spectrum, supporting applications in inspection and surveillance.

Sony STARVIS sensors include a range of sensor-level features that improve image quality and simplify downstream processing.

  • DOL HDR (Digital Overlap): captures multiple exposures to extend dynamic range, with image combination handled by the ISP
  • Clear HDR support: enables multi-exposure capture optimized for reduced motion artifacts
  • Super High Conversion Gain (SHCG): improves signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in low-light conditions
  • Enhanced near-IR sensitivity: extends performance beyond the visible spectrum

These features provide high-quality input data to the ISP, enabling more efficient system design and improved results in low-light and high-contrast environments.
