Time of Flight Image Sensors

High speed, high accuracy depth sensing

Time of Flight (ToF) Image Sensors - Sony Sensor Distribution

Sony offers both direct (dTOF) and indirect ToF (iTOF) type sensors for depth sensing and 3D image captures. With the help of a laser or LED light source, these sensors can detect the reflected light and measure the time the light took to reach the target object and be captured by the ToF sensor resulting in accurate depth measurement.

3D Depth Sensing (X, Y, Z)

Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors capture not only 2D spatial data (X, Y) but also depth (Z) by measuring the time delay of reflected light.

This enables true 3D imaging, allowing systems to analyze object shape, volume, and distance—critical for applications such as robotics, inspection, and spatial measurement.

Direct (dToF) vs Indirect (iToF) architectures

ToF technology determines distance leveraging  the fact that the speed of light is constant and through controlled illumination. Two primary approaches are used:

  • Direct ToF (dToF): Measures the round-trip time of individual light pulses, enabling high-accuracy distance measurement, especially over longer ranges
  • Indirect ToF (iToF): Calculates distance using phase shift of modulated light, enabling high-speed depth mapping with efficient pixel-level implementation

Each approach offers trade-offs between range, accuracy, and system complexity, allowing selection based on application requirements.

Practical benefits of ToF sensors

Simplified system design

ToF sensors provide real-time depth data without the need for complex multi-camera 3D systems, significantly streamlining hardware and software architecture.

Direct & accurate depth data

By utilizing a calibrated illumination source, these sensors directly measure distance to output precise depth information for every pixel.

High-speed decision making

The ability to deliver rapid, precise measurements makes ToF technology ideal for robotics motion planning and AGV collision avoidance where fast, reliable processing is critical.

Reliable performance

These sensors enable stable 3D sensing and positioning, supporting efficient navigation and object recognition in connected industrial and IoT environments.
